Get the Look: Quiet Luxury
From the latest season of the TV hit Succession to Gwyneth Paltrow’s highly discussed court looks, quiet luxury seems to be what everyone is talking about right now - which, considering its name and the fact that dressing this way means not following trends, seems a bit ironic. Instead of big logos and bright colours screaming for attention, stealth wealth, another name for TikTok’s current obsession, is all about muted colours, timeless and high-quality pieces that seamlessly work with the rest of your wardrobe.
While one can judge whether an outfit looks high-end, the absence of logos means a quiet luxury look has iykyk written all over it - the trend stands for pieces that are recognised as expensive by people in the know, stating luxury without stating luxury. That, next to the fact that quiet luxury is associated with the very wealthy, makes it seem like a club not everyone belongs to. But, as with everything in fashion, there shouldn’t be any rules. Despite all the buzz around quiet luxury suggesting this is exactly how rich people dress, they have, like all of us, a personal style. Some like it loud and logo-heavy, while others prefer their clothes to be minimalistic or just something in between. The more you think about it, the more it becomes apparent that quiet luxury is much more than a fashion trend. It’s a way of life and the perfect representation of intentional shopping, rating quality over quantity and focusing on investment pieces. It’s wearable, stands the test of time and is, therefore, tied to the conversation around sustainability in fashion. If you are, like me, living for a pulled-together, understated outfit, the world’s soft spot for quiet luxury can be a good source of inspiration to create even better capsule wardrobe looks. Next to investment buys from Loro Piana, Khaite, Jil Sander, The Row, or Max Mara, pieces from Toteme or Tove are slightly more affordable. COS and Arket have brilliant wardrobe staples made from natural materials such as wool, cashmere and silk.
For this look, I paired off-white coloured wide-leg silk trousers with a cashmere jumper in an oatmeal hue and a waisted black coat. Even though quiet luxury refrains from logos, I couldn’t help but include Toteme’s T-Lock top handle bag, which shows the brand’s initial. Together with ballet flats, which are undoubtedly the shoe of the season, a silk scarf and golden hoop earrings, the look is complete and can be worn from the office to dinner. If you like to add a chicer note at night, swap the jumper for a buttoned-up black blazer and the ballet flats for strappy sandals in the same colour.
